IN/HUMAN: AI Art Exhibit
Examining the Rise of AI Art through an Early Exhibition
In September 2022, a unique exhibition titled IN/HUMAN was held at the Gagné Contemporary gallery in Toronto, featuring works by Dré Labre, Jason Theodor, and Jon Toews—three artists experimenting with AI-generated art. This exhibition provided an intriguing early glimpse into the emerging world of AI art.
The event was hosted at the distinctive Gagné Contemporary gallery, located in a former stable and only accessible through a back laneway. The unconventional space set an ideal stage for showcasing provocative and innovative AI art. The IN/HUMAN theme challenged ideas around technology, creativity, and what it means to be human.
Dré Labre exhibited several series of AI-generated pieces that illustrated the creative potential of the technology, while also poking fun at some of its limitations. Abstract liquid paintings were created through AI to emulate the movements of ballet dancers. Another series, titled "Miewsings," was prompted by the artist's cat walking on the computer keyboard. These whimsical pieces highlighted the random nature of early AI art. However, Labre also displayed more serious AI art, such as a set of retro futuristic posters and a utopian landscape titled "Solarpunk Treehouse."
While some initially questioned if AI art was "real" art, the enthusiasm and engagement with Labre's pieces at the exhibition demonstrated that AI art could resonate emotionally with an audience. The show provided an important touchpoint in the public's understanding and acceptance of this new art form.
In the process of generating his works for IN/HUMAN, Labre experimented with AI capabilities while also developing his own artistic voice. The exhibition represented an important milestone in both Labre's career and in the larger story of AI art.
